Ares 12: Industrial GSM measurement and remote monitoring for 14 sensors

Ares 12 is a GSM remote environment monitoring unit with back-up power. Ares 12 can be used wherever there is GSM coverage. Ares can be used to connect several different sensors, digital inputs and a module with digital relay outputs. Ares 12 includes a battery providing several hours of backup power. Alerts to power failures by email or SMS (up to 5 phone numbers). Ares can be connected to the online portal.

HWg-Ares12 is a GSM remote monitoring and alarming unit with an internal battery. External sensors are powered from the internal battery back-up, too, so that the environmental monitoring works even during power outages. Connect up to 14 external sensors (temperature, humidity, 4-20mA, light intensity, ...), a relay output module and 2 dry-contact detectors.

When a power outage occurs, up to 5 recipients can be notified by e-mail, SMS (text message), or by dialing preconfigured phone numbers. HWg-Ares 12 can be used as a simple GSM alarm thermometer. Status can be checked via SMS.

The new 2017 model of Ares 12 adds the option to connect a relay output module and the possibility to monitor connected sensors with the SensDesk online portal (service provided free of charge by the manufacturer). The web portal can be used to plot the values, configure the Ares unit remotely, or control its relay outputs. Graphs of values can be also displayed in HWg-PDMS (free software) which retrieves the values by e-mail.

Ares products are ready for large remote installations (hundreds of units). At the same time, it is easy to start with a single HWg-Ares 12 unit and watch the graphs in the SensDesk portal, in the HWg-PDMS software for Windows, or export them via XML to MS Excel.

First steps with the GSM/GPRS thermometer – Ares 12 Tset

SensDesk: Monitoring the Ares GSM unit via the web portal

  • In the Ares unit, configure your SensDesk account username and password.
  • Connect to to view the readings from sensors connected to your Ares.
  • SensDesk web portal can be used to configure Ares GSM units.
  • The SensDesk web portal supports both Ares products (Ares 10 and Ares 12).
  • SensDesk web portal can be used to control the relay outputs of the expansion module connected to the Ares unit.

How to connect Ares to PDMS

  • 1) E-MAIL:
    Through the email interface. Ares sends e-mails to a dedicated mailbox, where PDMS periodically downloads them.
    PDMS processes e-mails with attached LOG files as well as alert messages.
  • 2) HWg-Push:
    HWg-PDMS is installed on a server with a public IP address. Ares periodically sends data from connected sensors over HTTP.

  • What is the difference between Ares 10 and Ares 12?
    The main difference is the number of supported sensors (3 vs. 14) and the internal battery in Ares 12.
  • Can Ares 12 work as a GSM power detector / power monitor, that is detect the presence of 230VAC such as the input voltage of an UPS?
    Yes. Take advantage of the internal battery and simply signal an Alarm whenever the external power supply is interrupted.
    Another option is to detect the mains voltage with a PowerEgg2 unit connected to IN1 or IN2.
  • How many temperature/humidity combo sensors can be connected?
    The Ares 10 GSM thermometer supports 3 sensors (measured quantities), Ares 12 supports 14 sensors (quantities).
    Ares 10 supports only 1 combined temperature/humidity sensor.
    Ares 12 supports up to 7 combined temperature/humidity sensors.
  • Ares 12 supports 14 sensors but only has two RJ11 connectors. How can I connect more sensors?
    Sensors can be daisy-chained, or connected to a hub: T-Box2 (photo), T-Box (photo) or 1-Wire hub Power.
  • The humidity sensor reading oscillates around the specified SafeRange and I received over 50 e-mails in a single hour. What can be done about it?
    Set the hysteresis for this sensor to about 5% RH. This reduces the number of unnecessary alarm start / alarm end e-mails that would be sent a couple of seconds one after another.
  • How far can I connect the external sensors?
    1-Wire / 1-Wire UNI sensors: Max. 60 meters for each active port (RJ11 connector) at the Ares units.
    Some sensors may require additional power.
  • Can the Ares 12 SMS thermometer also notify me when a contact is closed or opened?
    Yes, you can even assign names to contact states (e.g. tank full/empty). When the state changes, a SMS is sent to a maximum of 5 phone numbers.
    You can also use SMS to query contact (DI) state.
  • Ares 12 features two digital inputs for dry contacts (IN1-IN2). Is it possible to extend the number of DI inputs?
    Yes, use the Expander 4xDI 1W-UNI expansion module – however, it counts for 4 sensor positions (out of the maximum 14).
  • Is it possible to connect Ares 12 to a cloud?
    Yes, Ares is a “cloud oriented sensor”. It can be connected to cloud systems as a “Cloud sensor”.

  • Where can I find the configuration software for Ares?
    The configuration software appears as the “ARESCONF.exe” file when the unit is connected over USB to a Windows computer.
  • Is it possible to download logged data over USB?
    Yes, the entire log file (data) can be downloaded over USB.
  • How fast does an output relay react to the clicking of a button in the SensDesk online portal?
    The time it takes to switch the output relay depends on the Ares GSM unit configuration in the SensDesk portal.
    By default the relay reacts within 1 to 15 minutes.
    When more frequent connection is enabled (Check period = 1 in SensDesk configuration of Ares parameters), the relay should react within 60 seconds.
  • Does the 2017 version of Ares12 completely replace the previous Ares 14 model?
    Yes. All older Ares12 units can be upgraded to the latest FW to increase the number of supported sensors.
