STE2: WiFi and Ethernet Thermometer with Digital Inputs

WiFi temperature and humidity sensor with two digital inputs for dry contacts. Connects to the network via WiFi or Ethernet with PoE (802.3af) support.
STE2 wifi thermometer is supplied with a power adapter and a temperature probe. STE2 wifi and ethernet thermometer supports SNMP.
STE2 online thermometer can be connected to the SensDesk online portal or to a SMS gateway.

Three external temperature or humidity sensors can be connected to the STE2 wifi thermometer. The two green Digital Inputs can be used to connect e.g. a dry contact door sensor. Sensor readings and detector states can be monitored over the WEB interface to achieve an online thermometer solution. Text message (SMS) or email alert is sent if the temperature exceeds a specified limit or a contact is closed. A separate product, SMS gateway, is used to send text messages. Supports secure TLS email (SMTP TLS).

Connecting to the online portal

  • STE2 can be connected to the online portal.
  • All devices, sensors, values, history and charts can be viewed from anywhere over the web, or in a mobile app.
  • For programmers: Devices connected to the portal can be monitored using a XML interface.


LAN and WiFi connection to the network

HWg PDMS: cabinet temperature monitoring system
  • STE2 wireless temperature sensor can be connected to the network over WiFi (2.4 GHz) or Ethernet (RJ45).
  • STE2 can be also powered over the Ethernet – PoE 802.3af.
  • When using LAN and WiFi at the same time, the IP thermometer will be accessible at two different IP addresses.
  • When using PoE, the humidity and temperature sensors are also powered over the Ethernet.
  • Digital inputs do not provide power to the detectors.
  • We recommend the online portal for remote monitoring of the wireless temperature sensor with the connected sensors and detectors.
  • For the SensDesk portal, mobile apps for sensor and detector monitoring are also available.

Text message (SMS) alerts

Alert SMS can be sent from the STE2 wireless thermometer in several ways:

  • Directly over the network using SMS-GW
    A text message can be sent from the STE2 temperature monitor to a specified phone number using the HWg-SMS-GW3 unit.
    No software is needed. HWg-SMS-GW should be connected to the same LAN. Sender's phone number is defined by the SIM inserted in the HWg-SMS-GW3 unit. Recipient's phone number is configured in the STE2 web interface, similarly to e-mail recipients.
    One HWg-SMS-GW3 gateway can be shared by several devices (e.g. Poseidon2 4002 in the picture).
  • With the HWg-Trigger application for Windows
    The HWg-Trigger application can run in the background on any PC with MS Windows. The application checks for device failures, disconnected sensors, or sensor readings outside of the Safe Range. Alarm status can be notified e.g. by sending a SMS to a specified number using a “HWg-SMS-GW3” in the same LAN.

  • Can I use STE2 online thermometer without LAN, only as a wifi termometer?
    Yes, STE2 has an internal WiFi antenna. LAN is only needed for initial configuration.
  • Can I use the STE2 network temperature sensor also as a humidity monitor / wifi humidity sensor?
    Yes, with a humidity sensor (sold separately).
  • Can I connect Temp and HTemp sensors at the same time?
    Yes, STE2 can measure up to three quantities – in this case, 2x temperature, 1x humidity.
    For more sensors, we recommend Poseidon2 products.
  • How far can I connect the external sensors?
    Maximum distance is 2x 60m. Each active port (RJ11 connector) of the STE2 thermometer supports external sensors at 60m total length.
  • Can I connect an external WiFi antenna to the STE2 digital thermometer?
    No, STE2 can only use its internal WiFi antenna.
  • Can I use WiFi and LAN at the same time?
    Yes, both network interfaces of the temperature monitoring device can be used at the same time. STE2 then appears twice in the "HWg Config" configuration utility under two different IP addresses.
  • Can I connect other than temperature and humidity sensors (e.g. illumination, voltage etc.) to the STE2 wlan thermometer?
    No, STE2 wifi thermometer only supports temperature and humidity sensors. For other sensors, we recommend the Poseidon2 product family.
  • Can I connect sensors by other manufacturers to the DI (Digital Inputs)?
    Yes, connect a relay output or a dry (voltage-less) contact of any device.
  • Where can I find the MIB file for connecting with my SNMP software?
    The STE2.mib file is available at the "System" page. Simply save it and import it into your SNMP software.
  • Can I control relay outputs with STE2?
    No. STE2 wlan thermometer only provides digital inputs. For relay control, we recommend the Damocles, I/O Controller or Poseidon product family.
  • Can I connect external Pt-100 or Pt-1000 temperature probes to the STE2 digital thermometer?
    No, these probes cannot be connected to STE2.
    Pt100 and Pt1000 temperature sensors can be connected to Ares (GSM thermometer) and Poseidon2 units through an external converter.
  • How can I plot the temperature from the wifi temperature sensor in a graph?
    To monitor temperature, use our HWg-PDMS software.
  • Where can I find SNMP Trap settings?
    STE2 does not support SNMP traps. If you need them, use Poseidon or Damocles products.
  • Can I use STE2 wireless thermometer without a SNTP server?
    Yes. The SNTP server is used to synchronize time and to initialize the clock after power up. However, the time shown in e-mails will be incorrect.
  • How can I create a report with recorded temperatures?
    Use the supplied HWg-PDMS software. Recorded values can be displayed or exported to MS Excel.
  • Is there an app for my mobile phone?
    Yes, several third-party apps for Android and Apple are available here: Android and iPhone mobile apps for HW group products
  • The humidity sensor reading oscillates around the specified SafeRange and I received over 50 e-mails in a single hour. What can be done about it?
    Set the hysteresis for this sensor to about 5% RH. This reduces the number of unnecessary alarm start/end e-mails that would be sent a couple of seconds one after another.
  • Can STE2 detect the presence of 230VAC (e.g. the input voltage of an UPS)?
    Yes, use the input voltage detection feature of the PowerEgg2 unit, or any relay with a contact connected to the "Dry Contact" digital input of STE2.
  • Is it possible to connect STE2 thermometer online to a cloud?
    Yes, STE2 is a “cloud oriented sensor”. It can be connected to cloud systems as a “Cloud sensor”.
